Fish and other odors can quickly develop in boats, yachts, and cabin cruisers due to the confined space and lack of ventilation. The smell of fish can linger for days, even after the catch has been removed. Other odors, such as mildew, fuel, and sewage, can also become trapped in the enclosed space, creating an unpleasant environment for passengers. While proper storage of fish and waste can also help prevent odors from developing in the first place, it is not always that easy. The natural oils from fish, coupled with algae and other sea-related odors can quickly turn into some pretty rank and lingering odors.

Fish odors can quickly become pungent if not cleaned up quickly and properly because fish contain a high concentration of trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), a compound that breaks down into trimethylamine (TMA) when the fish starts to spoil. TMA is responsible for the strong, unpleasant odor associated with rotten fish. When fish is left out at room temperature or not stored properly, bacteria begin to break down the TMAO, releasing TMA and causing the fish to emit a foul smell. If not cleaned up promptly and thoroughly, the TMA molecules can linger in the air and on surfaces, making the odor difficult to eliminate.
